It was a month of record breaking temperatures in Georgia in September of 1999. American Beauty and Fight Club had hit the big screens. On the radio, people were listening to Mambo Number Five by Lou Bega and Unpretty by TLC. Bill Clinton was in the white house.

But all of that was far away from the mind of exuberant, and petite, eighteen year old Elaine Nix on Monday, September 20th, 1999 as she left her parent’s home in suburban Gainesville Georgia to drive to Zack’s Food Rack, a convenience store and truck stop a short distance from her home.

You see, Elaine, had gotten a rather nasty page from her boyfriend just before 11 pm that fateful Monday evening. Incensed, Elaine jumped in her 1986 Toyota Celica and made her way to the closed Zack’s Food Rack where she could call her boyfriend from a pay phone without racking up hefty long distance charges. She talked with her boyfriend, Billie Milwood until 12:10 am.

What occurred in the following minutes and hours is a mystery to this day. But one thing is certain, no one in Elaine Nix’s family ever saw her alive again.
